Epiphone Casino Flatwound Strings
The physical difference is the winding on the wound strings. On a roundwound set they're wrapped with a round wire. You run your fingers down them and they feel rough(and make noise). On a flatwound set they're wrapped with, for lack of a better descripton, a rectangular piece of steel that fit tight at the seams. The Beatles used Pyramid brand nickel flatwound strings, so if you're going for that sound you might try those or something comparable by D'Addario, Ernie Ball, or other more common brands. I think I'll put some of those on my Casino next time I change strings.
Just got these strings to replace my old flat wound. These strings are at least 3 times better then the one I had on. I was reluctant to buy these strings because of the price, but after putting them on and then hearing the way my guitar sounded they are the ones for me from now on. I use these strings on my Epiphone Casino '10 Guage'. The specific ones are 'D'Addario EHR340 Half Round Electric Guitar Strings, Light Top/Heavy Bottom, 10-52' which are nice for the extra thump on the bottom. Give your flat wounds a try on your Tele too, you might enjoy them I do know what you mean about the Casino holding you tight though, the Coupe's almost all I play since I got it.

Flatwound Strings Vs Roundwound
I use these strings on my Epiphone Casino '10 Guage' and my Rickenbacker 350V63 '11 guage'.
The sound of these flats on my Casino make my Casino sing like no other set of strings can do. The sound just chimes with great sustain, and that's unplugged!
On my Rickenbacker 350V63 it really enhances that 60 jangle and sparkle. It's bright and really chimes and enhances that sweet Rickenbacker sound.
Also, being flat wound they are kinder to the frets and cause less wear. They also last longer. I change my TI flats about once a year.
I'll only use Thomastik-Infelds Jazz Swing Flats on my guitars that use flat wounds. They give my guitars 'The Sweet Sound'.
