The expansion of SkyCity Adelaide has officially opened to the public.

The South Australian government imposed state-wide limits in response to a new cluster of coronavirus cases in Adelaide. In a statement to the stock exchange, the entertainment and gaming operator said SkyCity Adelaide would shut at midnight and would remain closed until 24 November. Saturday lunch is $24.95 for adults and $14.95 for children under 14. Saturday dinner bumps up to $34.95 for adults and still $14.95 for kids. However, your money will be well spent as the food is made to a great standard.

Aus Leisure reports the $330 million expansion and complete refurbishment of the heritage building sees the modern establishment featuring Eos by SkyCity, a five-star luxury hotel, four new restaurants and two new bars.

Set to open on December 3 and boasting 270-degree views of the city, Adelaide Hills, River Torrens and coast, SkyCity delivers an impressive South Australian tourism experience with South Australian Premier Steven Marshall noting “there is no doubt the new SkyCity is going to be a huge drawcard for our state.”

SkyCity Adelaide general manager David Christian advised that as one of the state’s largest private employers, he’s excited about the future and the role SkyCity will play in supporting tourism, local artisans and jobs for South Australians.

Christian said when SkyCity designed the new Adelaide complex, it had tourism and catering to local South Australian producers and suppliers at the front of their mind.

“I feel a sense of pride in what SkyCity has achieved since taking ownership 20 years ago,” Christian said.

“In just the past 12 months, SkyCity Adelaide has supported more than 700 local suppliers and employed an extra 500 staff, as well as producing 1000 construction jobs for the duration of the project.”

The Adelaide casino has been an important part of South Australia’s fabric since it opened in December 1985, when Premier John Bannon launched the building with a game of two-up to mark the opening of South Australia’s first casino.

At a cost of $30 million, Adelaide’s grand railway station was revolutionised.

Fast forward to July 2017 and SkyCity committed $330 million to proceed with plans to expand on the Festival Plaza and form part of the rejuvenation of the Riverbank Precinct, surrounded by the iconic revamped Adelaide Oval, Festival Centre and Convention Centre.

Eos by SkyCity, as well as the broader SkyCity expansion project, showcases more than $900,000 worth of local artwork.

With the curation overseen by former AGSA Chair Tracey Whiting, the artwork has been selected to integrate and complement the hotel’s subtle, modern aesthetic, with the colours, textures and tones a key interior design element.

The collection features more than 900 pieces from a diverse group of 40 contemporary South Australian artists featured throughout not just Eos, but also the new restaurants and bars, including Sol Bar and Restaurant.

SkyCity also recently announced restaurants ITL and Lucky Noodle, which along with the Westward Bar, will have access to SkyCity’s 7500 bottle master cellar, boasting a focus on South Australia wines, as well as Huami and Conference and Event facilities, set to open in 2021.

SkyCity reveals more about its Adelaide casino redevelopment

SkyCity Entertainment Group has revealed details of its much anticipated Adelaide Casino redevelopment, which is set to include Australia’s first brewery in a casino.

Casino Beats reported in November that the redevelopment, dubbed The District, is a “key pillar” of the group’s ongoing $330 million Adelaide transformation, which hopes to develop a “world class” integrated casino and entertainment precinct.

The District hopes to bring together all venues on level one in the current Heritage Building, incorporating a poker zone, sports bar, the Pirate Life microbrewery, live entertainment and bistro.

The District venue manager Jarrad Anderson said: “Aussies have always had a strong affiliation with good beer and places to drink it…live music, great food and watching sport is also part of our culture. Being able to find it all under one roof is our point of difference.”

The District at SkyCity features a mezzanine level, allowing increased capacity for live entertainment, where customers can enjoy Pirate Life beers tailor-made for the venue.

Pirate Life was founded in Adelaide in 2014 by Michael Cameron, Jack Cameron and Jared Proudfoot.

Proudfoot, Pirate Life co-founder and brewing director, said there’s a lot to be excited about as the first series of Pirate Life beers made exclusively for The District are introduced.

“Our first brew is the District Draught, brewed with Pale and Munich Malt, the District Draught is fresh, familiar and ready to session,” he commented.

“A hop free boil means ultra-low bitterness, with notes of citrus. It pours golden straw, with a generous pillow of foam. Expect aromas biscuit malt and nashi pear, with subtle notes of lime. The palate is malty, with a mild body and a clean, moreish finish.”

Other significant transformation works undertaken in the Heritage Building include repainting of the Marble Hall for the first time since the Adelaide Casino opened in 1985 and refurbishment and extension of the Baccarat Pavilion.

South Australia has not been nearly as hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic as states like New South Wales and Victoria. The former was the hot spot in Australia during the initial outbreak in March and April, but the new surge is focusing on Victoria. SA ranks fifth of the territories to date and has seen only a handful of cases in the past month.

That low rate in SA is what enabled SkyCity Adelaide to push forward with its reopening to include casino business. And as it continues to welcome more customers, the District at SkyCity is also moving on with its expansion.

With the openings in progress and looming, SkyCity made known that it will need about 700 new workers for its $330 million expansion called the District at SkyCity. This will staff four new restaurants and two new bars.

Reopening Adelaide Casino

SkyCity Entertainment officially unlocked the doors of its Adelaide Casino on June 29, 2020, after having closed on March 23 per the Australian government’s orders. The casino opening was a part of Stage Three of South Australia’s reopening plan.

It was far from an unconditional reopening, though. They welcomed Premier Rewards members only, and the operating hours were limited. SkyCity implemented physical distancing measures, increasing cleaning protocols, provided hand sanitizer to all guests and employees, and provided additional training for employees. The casino also set up a contact tracing system.

SkyCity Adelaide General Manager David Christian noted that the plan was a comprehensive one to ensure the safety of staff and guests. “With a workforce of more than 1,200 South Australians, our priority has remained getting our team back to work safely as we enter a historic period for SkyCity with the opening of our expansion and hotel later in 2020.”

On July 9, Casino Adelaide announced that it would open its doors wider. The general public could enter, though they were required to sign up for the rewards program in order to gain access. That process began on July 12.

There was a brief suspension of new signups on a few dates – July 20, 25, and 26 – due to the expectation of larger crowds to watch AFL matches. Otherwise, the reopening continued.

No Poker Indefinitely

The exception to the opening was one part of the casino – the poker room. It is called the Poker Zone, but it was one important part of the property that did not open with the rest of the casino. It is on an indefinite hold.

The website provides no details of poker plans. However, this is the situation in most places in Australia. For example, The Star Sydney just announced last week that its poker room will remain closed through the rest of 2020.

Why poker? The game involves a necessary amount of exchanged goods and interactions, many of which cannot be rearranged to allow for social distancing or sanitizing properly. Players all touch the cards and chips, as does the dealer. While tables could play short-handed – with only five or six players at each one – but that doesn’t resolve the chips and cards problem.

The original property opened in December 1985 on the north edge of the Adelaide city centre in the old railway station building. Adelaide Casino grew consistently through the 1990s, and SkyCity Entertainment Group bought it in the summer of 2000.

Some of the biggest area renovations happened in 2014 and 2015, but SkyCity announced a massive expansion in 2017. With the South Australian government’s approval, SkyCity announced a $330 million development to transform the Adelaide Casino into a “world-class entertainment hub on the Festival Plaza forecourt, adjacent to the Torrens River.” It was to be a part of the larger Festival Plaza redevelopment.

Construction began in early 2018 with an anticipated completion in 2020.

Everything moved along as a project of that size would do, all with the goal of a 2020 grand opening in mind. And then the pandemic hit.

Covid Can’t Stop This Train

Despite the shutdowns that started in March, work did continue on the project, as the Australian government deemed construction as essential work. SkyCity didn’t lose any time on the expansion, reporting that it progressed on budget and on time.

SkyCity launched Eos by SkyCity and began accepting bookings for the 120-room luxury hotel. And just earlier this month, the company announced a partnership with Pirate Life to set up a fully-functional microbrewery inside the District at SkyCity. The Pirate Life microbrewery will share Level 1 space with the Sports Bar and Poker Zone and Bistro, alongside live entertainment.

The project has created nearly 1,000 jobs during the construction and just started the recruitment process for 700 employees for the entire property. Some of those roles will continue through the middle of 2021 and others will continue indefinitely.
